Tonsil stones(tonsillolithiasis) are collections of debris in tonsil crypts produced by bacteria that may cause pain, a bad taste, bad breath, and a foreign body sensation in the throat.
Initial treatment includes twice daily gargles with half strength hydrogen peroxide, and manually removing stones with a water pik , qtip or toothbrush.
Laser cryptolysis is a minimally invasive office procedure using a CO2 laser to remove the tonsil crypts. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia with minimal recovery time and resumption of normal activities the day after the procedure.
Some patients may require additional sessions for complete resolution. In refractory cases, tonsillectomy may be indicated.
