A recent article in the journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery(Volume 172 Number 4 April 2025) indicates that sleep surgery significantly reduces the risk of motor vehicle accidents in patients with obstructive sleep apnea compared to CPAP and no treatment.
Patients with obstructive sleep apnea commonly experience daytime lethargy. If left untreated, daytime somnolence increases the risk of motor vehicle accidents. While CPAP is effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, 100% compliance in necessary to avoid daytime sleepiness.
Patients who undergo sleep surgery such as tonsillectomy, uvulopalatoplasty, or Inspire implantation are effectively “permanently” treating their obstructive sleep apnea, and so avoid concerns about daytime lethargy and the effect on driving.
